# Create and manage member badges in Instaloops

> Design member badges in Instaloops using icons or uploaded images. Assign stages so higher-ranked badges display first on posts and profiles.

Badges appear next to member names on posts and profiles in Instaloops. They recognize contributions, roles, or milestones. You can create badges with a built-in icon or a custom image, assign a stage to control display priority, and remove badges when they are no longer needed.

<Note>
  Only community owners and admins with **Manage settings** permission can access this tab.

## Create a badge

<Steps>
  <Step>
    Open your community settings and select the **Badges** tab.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Choose **Artwork**: pick **Icon** or **Image**.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Enter a **Name** (up to 50 characters), for example "Founder."
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Set a **Stage** (1 to 99). Higher stages outrank lower ones when a member holds several badges.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    If you chose **Icon**, select a glyph from the options. If you chose **Image**, paste a URL or upload a square PNG or JPG.
  </Step>

  <Step>
    Click **Add badge** to save.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Edit or delete

* The badge list shows all existing badges ordered by stage. Each row displays the name, stage, and whether it uses an icon or image.
* Click the trash icon next to a badge to delete it. This removes the badge from every member who has it.

<Warning>
  Deleting a badge cannot be undone. Members will lose that badge immediately.
</Warning>

## How stages work

When a member has multiple badges, Instaloops sorts them by stage from highest to lowest. The highest-stage badge appears most prominently.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Can members earn badges automatically?">
    Currently, badges are assigned manually by owners and admins. There is no automatic trigger based on post count or membership duration. Assign badges from the member management area.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What image size works best for badge images?">
    A square image works best because badges are displayed as circular chips next to member names. PNG or JPG formats are supported. Very large files may be resized automatically.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I change a badge stage after creation?">
    No, you cannot edit an existing badge's stage or artwork directly. If you need to adjust these details, delete the badge and recreate it with the new settings, then reassign it to members.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why does my uploaded image not appear?">
    Make sure the file is a PNG or JPG and that it uploaded completely. If you pasted a URL instead, verify the link is publicly accessible and points directly to the image file.
  </Accordion>

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Add badge button is disabled">
    The button stays greyed out until you enter a badge name. If you selected an image, you must also provide a valid image URL or complete an upload before the button becomes active.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Badge deleted by mistake">
    Deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. If you removed a badge accidentally, recreate it with the same name and stage, then reassign it to the affected members.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Badge preview does not match the final look">
    The preview chip shows a close approximation, but the exact size and placement may vary slightly depending on where the badge appears in the feed or on profiles.
  </Accordion>
